WHAT KIND OF PRINTER?
Most printers used for Jewellery Tags are called thermal printers. This means they produce heat to transfer an image created by a computer. There are two main types of thermal printers, DIRECT THERMAL and THERMAL TRANSFER. Both these printers are quite different and you should be sure to purchase the right one. Direct thermal printers use a thermally receptive material, (the material has a coating that is effected by heat). These printers are often used to produce register receipts and we've all had those receipts that fade in time or when exposed to sunlight. These printers (ZETAGS DT200 shown above) are not suitable for Jewellery tags. They are occasionally used for applications like diamond envelopes that are not exposed to sunlight). At little more cost are thermal transfer printers. These printers use a ribbon and burn the ribbon ink onto the surface and right combination of printer and material can give outstanding results. ZETAGS claim their white specially coated material is almost indestructible and print is guaranteed for 10 years. It simply won;t come off even after 5 hours ultra-sonic testing.
